Defense Counsel Section Membership

MLRC’s Defense Counsel Section includes more than 200 law firms across the country, as well as overseas, that specialize in media and First Amendment defense representation. These leading law firms provide not only financial support, but also substantially and directly participate in MLRC research projects, surveys, symposia, and other programs.  MLRC and its members manage a number of committees that contribute to MLRC projects and services.

The Defense Counsel Section has an executive committee which oversees activities of the section.

To apply for MLRC Defense Counsel Section membership, please print out and complete a Membership Form and Questionnaire, and send them to MLRC via fax (212-337-9893) or postal mail (80 Eighth Avenue, Suite 200, New York, New York 10011).

Membership Options

The Media Law Resource Center offers three types of memberships to law firms:

Firms that can confirm that they do not represent plaintiffs in libel, privacy or related actions, at least in actions against media defendants and/or journalists, may join as either Basic or Enhanced Defense Counsel Section members.   There are special membership rates in these categories for small firms (three lawyers or less).

Firms outside of the United States and its territories that do an extensive amount of media defense work, but may, as well, on occasion, represent plaintiffs in media cases — often due to professional ethical obligations, as is the case in the United Kingdom — and are very much interested in free speech and free press issues, the defense of media and others who publish or speak, may join MLRC as Associate Members.
