Harold "Hal" Fuson, Jr.

FusonHarold W. Fuson, Jr. – or Hal, as we all know him – is Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer and a Director of The Copley Press, Inc.  In 1983, Hal began his long  career with The Copley Press as Vice President of Legal Affairs and as General Counsel.  In 1996, he became Vice President for Central Illinois Operations, where he was responsible for directing the operations of the Peoria Journal Star and the GalesburgRegister-Mail.  That same year he also assumed the role of Senior Vice President, Chief Legal Officer.

From 1998-2006, Hal was a director on the Media Law Resource Center’s Board of Directors and from 2003-04 served as its Chair.  He currently serves as a director of the Newspaper Association of America.

Hal Fuson completed law school in 1975 and began his career on the legal side of the newspaper business, first as Staff Counsel for The Times Mirror Company from 1979-83 then as Senior Staff Counsel in 1983.

Before attending law school, Hal worked first as a reporter-photographer for the Galesburg Register-Mail in 1967 and then as a copy editor and assistant news editor for The Houston Post from 1969-70.  While at The Houston Post, Hal began his teaching career.  He was a college journalism teacher at Texas Southern University from 1968-70, at Cuyahoga Community College from 1970-76 and at the University of Illinois from 1976-79.

In 2006, Hal Fuson received the California Press Association’s Newspaper Executive of the Year Award, the Illinois Press Association’s James C. Craven Freedom of the Press Award in 1997 and the Grinnell College Alumni Award in 1993.

In addition to his work at The Copley Press, Hal is also the Vice President and Governmental Affairs Committee Chair for the California Newspaper Publishers Association, and serves on the BNA Media Law Reporter Advisory Board.  In 1995 he authored the book TELLING IT ALL: A Legal Guide to the Exercise of Free Speech and wrote a chapter in Prepublication Review in Libel Litigation 1992 for the Practising Law Institute.

Hal is a graduate of Grinnell College, has an M.S. in Journalism from Columbia University and received his J.D. from Cleveland State University.
